An Evening with Professor Wole Soyinka

The Bank as part of its CSR activities supported the hosting of Professor Wole Soyinka for the launch and reading of his latest book, “Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth” at the British Library on the 22nd November.

 

Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka known as Professor Wole Soyinka is a Nigerian playwright, novelist, poet, and essayist. He was born in Nigeria, Africa and was educated in England. Professor Soyinka was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986 becoming the first African laureate. He has periodically been a visiting professor at the universities of Cambridge, Sheffield, and Yale.

 

Professor Soyinka has published numerous works in a variety of genres including drama, memoir, fiction and cultural critique. He continues to engage actively with art and life in Nigeria and Africa, and annually presents the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa, set up in his name in 2005.
