With its continued longstanding support of UNICEF, Access Bank Group, along with 5th Chukker, The Access Bank UK and Access Private Bank hosted the Access Bank Polo Day 2019 at the Guards Polo Club, Windsor on Saturday 13th July 2019.

The Polo is an annual event, which brings everyone together to help raise funds to go towards education projects in northern Nigeria in particular via a UNICEF project. The event was attended by over 1,000 esteemed guests, and during the day $1,107,879 was pledged for 40 new classrooms to be built and fully equipped as part of children’s education in Northern Nigeria.

The Access Bank Cup is the culmination of the Fifth Chukker Access Bank/UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament. The day was filled with two exciting polo matches between, Fifth Chukker, Kangimi Resorts, Shoreline and Malcomines.

The Emir’s Cup was won by the Shoreline team, represented by, Alfredo Bigatti, Santiago de Esrada, Tunde Karim and Adebayo Karim, where they competed against the Malcomines team.

For the Access Bank Charity Cup, Ignacio Toccalino, Adamu Atta, Amr Zedan and David Stirling came together as the Access Bank Fifth Chukker team, and were victorious against the Kangimi Resorts team, winning the game with a finished score, 7 – 6.5.

The prizes were presented to the players personally by his Highness, Muhammad Sanusi II, CON, who had watched both games from the Access Bank’s exclusive lawn. After the prize giving ceremony the celebrations continued with an enjoyable celebration in the marquee held on the grounds. (Click here for highlights of the day).

The event was a huge success and its sponsorship provides a platform for supporting orphaned and vulnerable children in Nigeria. It was organised by Access Private Bank, a division of The Access Bank UK Limited which has just published its Report and Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2018. The Bank recorded another year of growth, achieving and exceeding target for all the main growth areas. Operating Income was up 47% year-on-year to £53.0m, Pre-Tax Profits overall grew by 50% to £33m and Return of Equity rose to 18.3%. All four strategic business units, Trade Finance, Commercial Banking, Asset Management and Dubai also showed continued growth.

Trade Finance Income increased yet again year-on-year by 20% to £23.7m. Commercial Banking income saw an increase of 90% year-on-year to £21.9m. Asset Management and Private Banking income increased by 13% year-on-year to £1.7m. In the second year, of being up and running Dubai saw a significant increase, with income rising by 213% to £2.1m.

Jamie Simmonds the CEO and Managing Director of The Access Bank UK Limited commented on the published results: “The Bank’s growth has flowed naturally from the strength of dynamic customer relationships and the trust that comes from the continuity of delivery by the same team.” He also added “The closeness of the relationship with our parent is important, and we continue to collaborate closely, alongside the independent income streams that we have built to ensure we have a resilient and sustainable UK operation.”

Herbert Wigwe, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of The Access Bank UK Limited also added: “In reflecting on The Access Bank UK’s many operational highlights of 2018, including a 50% year-on-year increase in pre-tax profits to £33m, it is clear that the Group’s UK operation is ideally positioned to capitalise on the greater international capabilities of an enlarged Group and, with its customer-focused, solutions-driven approach, go on to even greater success.”
